Deepa Philips

Deepa is a queer immigrant educator, artist, and birthworker. She was born in Goa, India and raised on the East Coast. Deepa's background is in health equity and youth organizing work. She's been a facilitator and advocate at national and local organizations, including Harlem Health Promotion, Youth Speaks, and La Cocina, and holds a Masters' in Public Health from Columbia University, where she was a Community Scholar. Deepa worked as a trauma-informed doula before entering the Certified Nurse-Midwifery/Women's Health Nurse Practitioner program at UCSF in 2019. She's passionate about reclaiming medical spaces and improving health access/ safety for trauma survivors and QTPOC. This is her first time co-organizing the LGBTQIA Health Forum and she's thrilled to be co-conspiring alongside you all.
Jo Probert

Jo (Joanne) Probert is a queer first year nursing student in the MEPN program, on track to become a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Jo aims to provide mental health care that meets the specific needs of the LGBTQIA+ community and individuals. Jo has a background in Public Health, and worked in clinical research and as an HIV test counselor before pursuing nursing. In their spare time, Jo loves to get outdoors, cuddle cats, and bake gluten free treats.

Carolynn Webb
Carolynn Webb Pronouns: they/she School of Physical Therapy, Second year Bio | |
Carolynn Webb (they/she) is a second-year physical therapy student at UCSF/SFSU. After graduating from Mills College, they owned and operated a specialty bakery in Oakland for five years. Their interests include LGBTQAI+ health, pelvic health physical therapy, sailing, collecting house plants, and their cat. They are the Co-Chair of the Health Forum education committee, the UCSF LGBT Resource Center Student Liaison to Physical Therapy, and a UCSF CARE Advocate.

Vicente Melgarejo
Vicente Melgarejo Pronouns: he/him/his Doctor of Pharmacy Candidate, 2022 Bio | | |
Vicente Melgarejo (pronouns: he/him/his) is a student pharmacist. He immigrated from Mexico to San Bernardino at the age of 15. He did his undergrad in biochemistry at UC Riverside, where he served as the treasurer of oSTEM. After pharmacy school, he wants to do residency and specialize maybe in oncology or psychiatry clinical pharmacy. He is also very passionate about public health and looks forward to incorporate that in his career, especially bringing more healthcare access to underserved minorities. He is currently part of the inter-professional accappella group Vocal Chords, as well as APhA-CPhA-ASP. Outside of school, he enjoys cooking, hiking, working out, road trips, cats, music and TV.

Queer Undergraduate Institute

Elaine Hsiang

Elaine (she/her) is a fourth-year medical student at UCSF currently applying to residency in emergency medicine. After graduating from Brown University, she served a year with AmeriCorps prior to medical school. Her interests include LGBTQ health, racial and migrant justice, health care workforce diversity, and poetry. She is the founder of the Queer Institute at UCSF, and a former co-chair of the UCSF LGBTQIA+ Health Forum.
Andrew Tam

Andrew (he/him) is a fourth-year medical student at UCSF. He received his undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley. His interests include LGBTQ health, global health, and development of innovative technologies improving access to care. His other interests include traveling and amateur baking. He was a committee member of the UCSF LGBTQIA+ Health Forum when he was a first-year medical student. He is excited to be back on the committee this year and will be part of the Queer Institute at UCSF this year.

Rey Berry
Rey Berry Pronouns: she/her School of Medicine, First year Bio | | | Research
Rey is a first year medical student at UCSF in the San Joaquin Valley Prime program. She grew up in the San Joaquin Valley area and is a daughter of an immigrant mother and queer father. She did her undergrad at CSU Fresno while working as a scribe, peer teacher, and hospice volunteer. She wants to return to the Central Valley and practice Emergency Medicine so she can give equitable care to everyone regardless of their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, income, or migration status. Her goal is to also raise awareness and be an advocate for her LGBTQIA+ community as well as those who struggle with their mental health. Her interests include taking her fur baby Nova to the dog park, boxing, spending time outdoors, being with family, and traveling.

Rae Wiest

Rae is in their first year of the Family Nurse Practitioner program at UCSF. Rae is queer and trans, originally from Tucson, Arizona. They've been in the Bay Area for 8 years and an RN for 11 years. They are interested in helping to create equity in healthcare while remaining critical of the systems that have created and perpetuated disparity.

Fion Ng
Fion Ng, MS, RN, PNP Pronouns: she/her Former LGBTQIA+ Health Forum Co-Chair Queer Institute: Speed Mentoring Edition

Fion is an alum of the UCSF School of Nursing Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program. She currently works as a Clinical Research Coordinator within the Dept of Community Health Systems, UCSF, as well as guest lectures within the School of Nursing. Outside of UCSF, she works as a nurse in adolescent mental/behavioral health. During her time at UCSF, she served as a 2018-2019 Student Learner on the UCSF LGBTQ Committee and as Director of Women's Health Group, in part with the UCSF Shelter Clinic. Her interests include preterm birth, reproductive health & justice, childhood trauma & resilience, and LGBTQIA+ health, diversity & inclusion in clinical and academic arenas. She is a former co-chair of the UCSF LGBTQIA+ Health Forum.
