(Enter 513 Parnassus, go up stairs in lobby, cross courtyard to Nursing, N-225 is on left)

Don't miss this fascinating new documentary about women's basketball coach Rene Portland of Penn State, whose unofficial training rules for 20+ years were: no drinking, no drugs, no lesbians. In 2005, after she dismissed her star player, the SF-based National Center for Lesbian Rights filed a discrimination suit on the player's behalf--and after a settlement was announced, Coach Portland resigned. Acclaimed filmmakers Dee Mosbacher, MD, PhD, and Fawn Yacker spotlight anti-lesbian bias in college sports--and why Coach Portland was not only tolerated but celebrated nationally.

UCSF PREMIERE:
STRAIGHTLACED: HOW GENDER'S GOT US ALL TIED UP

Thursday, Oct. 29: 12pm, Health Sciences West 303

(Enter Medical Sciences at 513 Parnassus, go up stairs, go out glass doors, and turn left up the courtyard to Health Sciences West)

In this moving and powerful new documentary from SF's own Groundspark, teens who identify as straight, LGBT, and questioning open up their lives to the camera: choosing between “male” and “female” deodorant, deciding whether to go along with anti-gay taunts in the locker room, having the courage to take ballet, avoiding the restroom so they won’t get beaten up, mourning the suicide of a classmate. As they talk with courage, candor, and humor, it becomes clear how gender stereotypes and gender policing affect them (and all of us)--and how teens and adults alike can create a more inclusive, empowering culture. Co-sponsored by the Center for Gender Equity

DISORDER"

12pm, Health Sciences West 301
(Enter Medical Sciences at 513 Parnassus, go up stairs, go out glass doors, and turn left up the courtyard to Health Sciences West)

In this documentary, a huge hit at Frameline, 13 diverse transgender people discuss how it feels to have their gender identity labeled by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as a "gender identity disorder." Using the diagnosis as a departure point, the interviewees--prominent San Francisco transgender activists--debunk myths about transgender identities, challenge stereotypical gender expectations, and offer insights into the terms and language used to describe transgender lives. This groundbreaking film is the first to explore the impact of the GID diagnosis on people who identify on the trans spectrum in their own words and images. Co-sponsored by the UCSF Center of Excellence in Transgender Health, for Transgender Remembrance Day
