About: Support

Although UCSF supports the Center for LGBT Health & Equity as much as possible in these tight budget times, the Center can only do as much as it does because some very generous groups and individuals have been moved by all we’ve accomplished and all we still hope to achieve. Every contribution makes a real difference—and we’re happy to work with donors to ensure that their gifts are used for what matters most to them.

Want to make sure students see the latest titles in the burgeoning-at-last LGBT health field? Give health professionals reliable information about transgender
care
? Sponsor a faculty summit to plan for truly LGBT-inclusive medical education? Develop LGBT health teaching materials for national distribution? Support LGBT students, individually and collectively, as they enter health and science fields where they’ve traditionally been invisible? Have another idea, or want to know what else is on our (long) wish list?

We’d love to talk with you about these possibilities and how you can help make them realities—regardless of the depth of your pockets. And if you’re particularly interested in supporting LGBT students, you may well want to consider supporting our new Hughes Fund.

The Samuel Hughes Fund was created in memory of Samuel C. Hughes, MD, who came to UCSF in 1980 and died in 2008 at 61. Sam was a leading international figure in obstetrical anesthesia—and also a beloved teacher, mentor, and friend to thousands of students and colleagues. At a time when it was very unusual to be out in medicine, Sam was unafraid to be known as gay, and supported a wide variety of LGBT causes on- and off-campus. He couldn’t have been a more wonderful role model, both within LGBT circles and beyond. In his memory, friends and colleagues have created a special fund to support projects benefiting LGBT students at UCSF.

Whatever your interests or resources, you’re warmly invited to contact Center Director Shane Snowdon by email or at 415.502.5593!
