Housing Assistant (Staff)
Zachary has been a UCSF employee since 2006 and OUT for 7 years. Zachary serves the missions of UCSF as a Housing Assistant in the Housing Services Office at UCSF Parnassus, where he provides customer service to students, faculty, post-docs, clinical fellows, researchers and ancillary students. He works to provide members of the UCSF community with excellence in campus housing, in order to make living at UCSF enjoyable, safe and accessible for all.
What he likes about working at UCSF
I have never felt more comfortable and excited to come to work. I appreciate the diversity of students, faculty and staff, and that I am not only tolerated for my sexual orientation, but am accepted and recognized as an equally valuable part of the UCSF community. |

How Zachary is OUT, IN the UCSF Community
I talk with co-workers about LGBT-related volunteer activities, am open about my sexual orientation, and feel totally accepted. Working at the Housing Services front desk, I help provide a safe space for customers and staff who might be out or in regarding their sexual orientation.
How Zachary is OUT, IN the community
I identify with the Queer, gay men, LGBTQ, spiritual, San Francisco, UCSF, SF State student body, young adult, and recovery communities, and volunteer with, participates in, and work for various organizations within these communities.
What he considers his most OUTstanding, INcredible achievement
Being clean and sober.
Zachary’s cultural heritage
I give credit to the “queer elders”—Harvey Milk, Harry Hay, Audre Lorde, Kate Kaufmann, and others—who worked so hard to afford me the rights I have today.
His role models
My parents, for raising their children and staying married despite difficult times, and Oprah, who has risen above her life’s circumstances to become one of the most well-known, most influential, most powerful women in the world, and because she has used this position of power to do good.
How Zachary would change UCSF to improve the quality of life for LGBT people
We need more LGBTI events, more rainbows, more glitter and fun.
How he would change the LGBT community
Often, we are too segregated within our own communities. We should truly honor all differences, and find more solidarity and more acceptance of various lifestyles and personalities.
