Out at UCSF: Visibility Project

Karon Wetzler
AAII (Staff)

Karon has been a UCSF employee since 2001. She has been out nearly 3 years and identifies as a bisexual woman. Her home town is Oakland. She serves the missions of UCSF as an AAII in pediatric hematology/oncology at the UCSF. As a member of the support staff, she works behind the scenes on projects that facilitate what the doctors and nurses do.

What Karon likes about working at UCSF
I like being part of something that matters.

How Karon is OUT, IN the UCSF Community
Aside from being listed on the LGBTI website, I think the only OUT thing that I do is gently remind my coworkers that tolerance is important.

How Karon defines community
A group of people with common interests and/or requirements

What communities Karon identifies with
I identify with the LGBTI community, the large person community, the asthma and fibromyalgia sufferers communities.

How Karon is OUT IN the community
I am what you would call “very nearly out.” I am out to friends online and to a trusted few at work. I openly discuss gay rights with everyone who will listen, but I don’t always come out and say that I’m referring to myself.

Karon’s cultural heritage
I am half Italian, but my features favor my German and Irish blood. I identify most with being Italian, because I grew up surrounded by the Italian part of my family.

Who Karon considers her role models
I have never given much thought to role models, and have always sort of blazed my own trail.

How Karon would change at UCSF to improve the quality of life for LGBT people
I don’t know; I’ve never seen any problems with UCSF and the LGBTI community.

What Karon would change in the LGBT community to improve the quality of life for LGBT people?
I would definitely want marriage to be legal for the LGBTI community, and both marriage and domestic partnerships to be recognized equally for all people.
