Out at UCSF: Visibility Project

Keith Kunkel
Analyst II, Research Administration System, Staff

Keith has been a UCSF employee since 2005 and OUT for over 26 years. Keith serves the missions of UCSF as an Analyst II on the Research Administration System, the Oracle application UCSF uses to link the Office of Research and the Accounting Office together.

What he likes about working at UCSF
The people in my office are all nice. I’m pretty good at the work I do, and the people I work for are appreciative.

How Keith is OUT, IN the UCSF Community:
I have a photo of my partner and our dog as my computer wallpaper. While there could be someone in the office who doesn’t know I’m gay, I’m not sure who.

How Keith is OUT, IN the community
If they want to know I’ll tell them.

Communities with which he identifies
Dog people, gay people, guys who drink beer, and former military.

What Keith considers his most OUTstanding, INcredible achievement
I’m a 20-year survivor of HIV. I also serve on the board of directors of a nonprofit that is building a campground and retreat center in Lake County for people and organizations of all spiritual and cultural heritages.

His cultural heritage
I’m a Californian/Texan, with some German in my ancestry. I’m a suburban-American/white gay male, and I consider Berkeley to be my home town.

How Keith would change UCSF to improve the quality of life for LGBT people
Things actually seem pretty ok.

How he would change the LGBT community
I’d like to come up with an “attitude gun” or maybe just a stick to poke someone when they start tearing someone else down to make themselves look bigger or better.
