Out at UCSF: Visibility Project

JoAnne Keatley
Minority Programs Manager and Director

JoAnne has been a UCSF employee since 1999 and identifies as female, transgender and heterosexual. In terms of being “out,” she can’t remember when she ever was “in.” JoAnne serves the UCSF missions of research and education through managing a portfolio of minority focused training projects in the PAETC region and directing a new statewide Center of Excellence for Transgender HIV Prevention. These dual roles allow JoAnne to bring forth her years of experience addressing HIV risk behaviors in underserved populations. She strives for quality educational approaches while attempting to meet minority populations’ HIV-related health needs.

What she likes about working at UCSF
I appreciate my wonderful supportive colleagues and the dynamic learning environment.

How JoAnne is OUT, IN the UCSF Community
I’m out completely, and in every aspect of my work! I also serve on various campus LGBTI committees and participate in campus LGBTI events whenever possible.

What communities she identifies with
Latino, transgender, immigrant.

How JoAnne is OUT IN the community
I’m involved through multiple volunteer commitments in my community and in my social circle. I have served multiple nonprofit organizations as a board member or officer, and am currently chair of San Francisco Transgender Empowerment Advocacy and Mentorship, and co-chair of Salva SIDA. I try to remember that as a transwoman who has had opportunities made available to me, I have a responsibility to provide mentorship for others. I relish sharing tidbits I have picked up along the way with others in my community.

What she considers her most OUTstanding, INcredible achievement
I am very proud that I was the first staff recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for LGBTI Leadership.

JoAnne’s cultural heritage
Mexican.

Her role model
My mother, for her fierce wisdom, strength and joy of life.

How JoAnne would change UCSF to improve the quality of life for LGBT people
Remove all barriers for achieving equality and equity in the workplace, raise awareness and share respect for difference.

How she would change the LGBT community
I know this sounds like a pageant response, but I would try to decrease apathy, increase personal comfort and willingness to step out of comfort zones, stand up and be counted.
