Member Services Manager (Staff)
David has been a UCSF employee since 1999. David serves the missions of UCSF as Member Services Manager at the AIDS Research Institute (ARI) at UCSF.
What he likes about working at UCSF
In my experience, there is no hierarchy at UCSF; people working at all levels seem to be appreciated. UCSF seems to care about its employees.
How David is OUT, IN the UCSF Community
I am completely out in my job and in all aspects of my life. It’s hard to imagine ever switching to a job where being gay is an issue. |

How David is OUT, IN the community
I don’t censor my behavior, so whenever I’m out in the community, I’m “out” in the community. I attend LGBT-related events, fundraisers, presentations, social events.
How he defines community
My community is defined by shared values, experiences, and interests. I consider my closest friends, whether gay or straight, male or female—to be my community.
Communities with which David identifies
Parts of some gay/queer and (politically) progressive communities.
What he considers his most OUTstanding, INcredible achievement
Coming out—it was a pretty big deal, and it’s never really finished.
David’s cultural heritage
My ancestors are Irish-English-Scottish-Welsh-Pennsylvania Dutch. My immediate cultural roots are in southeastern Massachusetts.
His role models
Noam Chomsky, Al Gore, Barbara Lee and Martin Luther King, Jr.
How David would change UCSF to improve the quality of life for LGBT people
I would change basic humanity at UCSF to allow all persons to be completely comfortable being exactly who they are.
How he would change the LGBT community
I would continue LGBTI event/networking groups (like Actively Out) that are creating opportunities for folks to socialize outside of the bars and Internet.
