Development Director (Staff)
A UCSF employee since 2006, Alan develops relationships with new and existing donors as Development Director for the AIDS Research Institute (ARI), University Development.
What he likes about working at UCSF
I love the people I work with who are really brilliant and independently spirited people. Their dedication to their work is awe-inspiring.
How Alan is OUT, IN the UCSF Community
I participate in some of UCSF's LGBT activities and I mention my husband in casual conversation when others talk about their significant others. |

How Alan is OUT, IN the community
Daren and I are publicly known as registered domestic partners with the city, state, and our employers. We are on the Planning Committee of the Eureka Valley Promotion Association.
How he defines community
A community is where one feels respected, cared about, and feels safe to be oneself.
Communities with which Alan identifies
San Francisco's Castro district, LGBTIQQ, friends and relatives, donors and staff at UCSF and former places of work.
What he considers his most OUTstanding, INcredible achievement
As an openly gay man, I raised $31 million dollars over ten years for Ronald McDonald House at Stanford, which broke stereotypes and changed thousands of peoples' views on gay people.
Alan's cultural heritage
I identify with my German heritage from my mother's side of the family and with the LGBT community through my uncle and his partner of 31 years.
His role models
My “god parents” Sonja Duddington and Dan Larsen, who took me in as a neighbor boy coming from a two-bedroom house with a single, deaf mother and eight siblings. They showed me what altruism and love for your fellow man really are.
How Alan would change UCSF to improve the quality of life for LGBT people
It would be nice for UCSF to honor and recognize Pride Month with a Pride holiday.
How he would change the LGBT community
I would like us to be less balkanized and be more inclusive, mutually respectful, and celebratory of our differences.
